Cinephilic Ramblings

I am Gerry. I love movies. Sometimes I make them.

Film Journal #146 - Martin Scorsese’s “Goodfellas” (1990)

It would be foolish to think that I could add anything to the dialogue of this unabashed masterpiece of filmmaking, but I do keep a film journal so here it goes.

“Goodfellas” is pure fucking cinema gold. The characters, dialogue, story, editing, camera work, design, everything about this movie soars to incredible heights. Thousands of filmmakers strive to make movies as good as “Goodfellas”, but very few filmmakers are as gifted as Martin Scorsese.

If “Goodfellas” is on, no matter when I come in or start watching, I become instantly hooked and have to watch the movie until the very end. “Goodfellas” simply blows me away every time I watch it.

Film Journal #253 - Martin Scorsese’s “Raging Bull” (1980)

Many would argue that “Raging Bull” is the quintessential film of the 1980s and it would be difficult to disagree with them. Looking back at the always impressive filmography of auteur, Martin Scorsese, it feels with “Raging Bull,” rather than “Taxi Driver,” that the director matured into his artistic voice. All the cinematic traits and stylistic flourishes that define a Martin Scorsese picture are perfected here. I can only imagine what it must’ve been like to behold for the first time in 1980.
