I doubt there is anything I can say about this movie that hasn’t already been said. Magnificent. A wonderful DVD from Criterion is definitely worth the money for its beautiful transfer, informative commentary and fascinating interviews.

Christian Bale is incredible in nothing short of a career defining performance. The film is heavily influenced by Martin Scorsese in all the best ways. Kudos to O. Russell and his stellar cast and crew.

An actor’s film. Features great performances and clever dialogue. Contains many beautiful compositions by cinematographer Danny Cohen and production designer Eve Stewart.

A beautiful film and one of my all time favorites. One day I’ll hopefully make a film that is at least half as emotionally compelling as this one. Capra and Stewart don’t get enough credit. I look a lot like Stewart does in this picture every time I watch this movie.

A solid Western in the style of old John Ford classics. Great performances all around. Features the witty dialogue and unique humor I’ve come to expect from the Coen’s.

Richard Linklater calls the film, “the purest American road movie ever made.” I’m inclined to agree. They don’t make movies like this anymore. This is the truest I have ever seen the cross country road trip portrayed on film. One of my all time favorites.

Film Journal #61 - Darren Aronofsky's "Black Swan"...
Believe the hype. A taut thriller from a filmmaker who just keeps getting better and better. Just hand Ms. Portman her golden statue now.

Film Journal #58 - Michael Powell's "Peeping Tom"...
There’s an inherent voyeurism in cinema. This film is all about that and it is incredible. Scopophilia is the $500 word here. Read Mulvey’s essay on it, she’s a smart woman.

Movies like this make me think, “Why do I even fucking try?” This film honestly changed my life and I can unapologetically say I think it’s the greatest piece of cinema ever created.
